52 of 53 people found the following review helpful Good, authentic Japanese style futon, October 29, 2009 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: J-Life Japanese Traditional Shiki Futon - TWIN SIZE (shikibuton) I've been sleeping every night on this futon for more than a year now, and am very happy with it. The first thing I noticed when I got it was its weight. It weighs about 27 pounds, and is a little unwieldy to transport. I also noticed a smell that I assume is the boric acid which is used as a fire retardant. The smell has diminished with time so that it isn't really noticeable any more.
The construction of the mattress is very solid. It has a very tough outer cover over a 4 inch layer of thick cotton batting. There is also a zipper to allow access to the batting, or perhaps to allow the cover to be washed (although I don't think that would be advisable).
Because of the firmness of this mattress, I found that it took a little time to adjust to it after sleeping on a regular mattress. Also, my body doesn't sink into the mattress as much, which makes it a little harder to sleep on my side. I've found that it helps to use a Japanese style pillow (such as this one:... Read more
9 of 10 people found the following review helpful Soooo Comfortable, January 31, 2011 By CDB "Spy Reader" (Austin, TX USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: J-Life Japanese Traditional Shiki Futon - TWIN SIZE (shikibuton) I bought this mattress so that my godson, who loves everything Japanese, would be comfortable when he visits my house. Well, I ended up sleeping on it myself (long story) for a week, and I slept like a baby. The mattress was right on the wood floor. I put a moderately thick featherbed on top of it, but I always like those. The mattress was so comfortable that I slept as well or better than on my regular organic cotton mattress. If you need a mattress that can fold up for tight storage, I highly recommend this one. You could even sleep on it every night. The directions say that it may take several weeks for the vacuum-packed mattress to fluff up completely, but you certainly don't need to wait more than a couple of days to sleep soundly on it. It smelled a little like straw or hay when I opened the package, but the smell went away within a few days.
5 of 5 people found the following review helpful J-Life Japanese Traditional Shiki Futon-Twin, May 15, 2011 Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: J-Life Japanese Traditional Shiki Futon - TWIN SIZE (shikibuton) I absolutely love my futon. I dislocated my knee cap and so was unable to get into my loft bed. I had wanted this futon, anyway, and it has been awesome. I sleep on my back and I don't move at night, so this works for me. I have to kind of shake it a bit so that it fluffs back out after I've slept on it awhile, but it's much better than the mattress I have. I'm also 5' tall, so it's not too short for me, but someone taller may want a larger size. My futon is on my carpeted floor and I've been sleeping on it like this for over a month now. I have no complaints! Oh, and this is much different from your other types of futon mattresses. It's not too hard like others. It's closer to like the ones I slept on in Japan, though not quite as soft, but I also don't have a tatami mat underneath.
